DISCUSSION: Media in South Africa


The South African Broadcasting Corporation has been acknowledged for a significant improvement in how the 2019 general elections were covered as well as being noted for having more balanced than previously.
According to Media Monitoring Africa’s analysis of coverage by media institutions – out of 3,137 items analysed across television, radio and online platforms, 99% were found to be “balanced and fair”.
And in a study commissioned by the Reuters Institute, South Africa rates 8th out of 38 countries in terms of trust in the news, respondents found South African media effective in holding politicians and businesses to account.
