Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called for free and fair elections in Sudan during the African Union summit in Cairo on Tuesday, where leaders agreed to give three months to Sudanese military to implement a democratic transition.

“I’d like to voice our appreciation and tribute to the brotherly Sudanese people, who demonstrated with their civilized and peaceful behaviour their ability to express their will and legitimate desires for change,” said el-Sisi.

He stressed that Sudan needs “a consensual political solution that fulfils the aspirations of the Sudanese people for change, development and stability and to develop a clear vision of the benefits of this stage, and lead to free and fair elections.”

African leaders agreed to give Sudan’s ruling military council three months to enable a democratic transition in the country.
