► Robert Mugabe, the former president of Zimbabwe, has died at the age of 95.

He ruled over the country for nearly 40 years – at the start being seen as an icon of its independence, but then, as a brutal dictator who stopped at nothing to retain power.

He resigned two years after being deposed in a military coup.
