President of Burkina Faso resigns

Burkina Faso’s president Blaise Compaore has bowed to two days of violent protests over his leadership by nnouncing his resignation.

He called for elections within 90 days in a statement broadcast on national television.

Army Chief Honore Traore declared himself temporary head of state shortly afterwards.

A state of emergency was declared on Thursday after parliament and several other state buildings were torched.

Anger erupted when Compaore, who’s been in power for 27 years, attempted to amend the constitution to extend his tenure.

His resignation was announced to large cheers in front of protesters in the capital Uagadougou.

Former colonial power France has called for speedy democratic elections.
